7. Morgan Freeman to rescue Scarlett Johansson for Luc Besson
Jun 19th 2013, 06:30

American actor, Morgan Freeman is in talks for a key part in Lucy, the French director's upcoming thriller, reveals TheWrap.com.

Morgan Freeman is in the running to play an eminent evolutionary scientist in this suspenseful picture written by Luc Besson himself and starring Scarlett Johansson.

After reprising her Marvel comics role as the Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff in the upcoming superhero blockbuster Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Scarlett Johansson will play a young woman forced to serve as a mule for a drug racket.

The accidental absorption of some of the experimental drug she's carrying boosts her physical and mental powers tenfold - and puts her in mortal danger. Lucy's only hope is a professor specializing in evolutionary effects on the brain....

Following in the footsteps of Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Joan Of Arc), Anne Parillaud (Nikita) and Louise Bourgoin (The Extraordinary Adventures Of Adèle Blanc-Sec), Johansson will soon be joining the ranks of Luc Besson's heroines.

Besson will start shooting Lucy later this year when the actress is released from the set of the Avengers sequel. In the meantime, he'll be coming out this fall with The Family (also known as Malavita), a mafia action comedy starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer.

5. Danielle Bradbery wins 'The Voice'
Jun 19th 2013, 04:28

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pitch-perfect teen country singer Danielle Bradbery won TV singing contest The Voice on Tuesday, scoring a contract with Universal Music Group and a US$100,000 cash prize.

Bradbery, who was coached by fellow country singer Blake Shelton, covered her mouth and began to cry when named the winner, hugging runner-up Michelle Chamuel.

"I'm so thankful," the 16-year-old Texan said. "I'm sorry, I'm speechless."

Bradbery, who said she had never had a singing lesson before the show, rode Sara Evans' country hit Born To Fly and Carrie Underwood's All-American Girl to victory, becoming the youngest winner of the NBC singing competition in its fourth season.

She topped pop-rock singer Chamuel, who was coached by R&B singer Usher, and third-place finishers the Swon Brothers, country-rock singers Colton and Zach Swon, who were also coached by Shelton.

It was the third consecutive win for Shelton, a mainstay atop the U.S. country charts with song like Who Are You When I'm Not Looking and Drink On It.

Colombian pop singer Shakira and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine were shut out of the final three - their final protégées were voted out during last week's elimination round.

The Voice uses a combination of audience voting over the Internet and text message and downloads of the singer's songs from the Apple's iTunes music store.

The two-hour finale included the first live TV performance by Cher in more than a decade. Former judge Christina Aguilera, rocker Bob Seger and pop singer Bruno Mars also performed.

Cher, 67, performed Woman's World, a new single from her album of the same name which is to be released in September, the Grammy-winning singer's first in 12 years.

Aguilera, who will be returning to the show for the fall season, opened the show joining rapper Pitbull in their hit song, Feel This Moment.

Contestants eliminated earlier in the season also performed on Tuesday's finale and Monday's penultimate show.

The Voice, which competes against rival broadcaster Fox's singing contests American Idol and The X Factor, averages between 12 million and 14 million viewers over its two weekly shows.

Its fifth season will begin in the fall with former coaches Aguilera and CeeLo Green returning to replace first-time coaches Shakira and Usher, who will return for season six.

6. Director Juan Antonio Bayona to helm 'Penny Dreadful'
Jun 19th 2013, 04:28

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Juan Antonio Bayona, director of The Orphanage and The Impossible, has been tapped to direct the first two episodes of Penny Dreadful, the Sam Mendes-produced drama series coming to Showtime.

The eight-episode series, which re-teams Mendes with Skyfall writer John Logan - who created, wrote and is executive producing the series - is billed as "a psychosexual horror series" featuring some of literature's most iconic figures. Production on the series, which Mendes is also executive producing (as is Pippa Harris) begins in London this fall.

The project depicts characters such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and characters from the novel Dracula becoming embroiled in Victorian London, weaving together classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.

Just eat it: Papi Zak (right) and Grumpy pondering if they can finish eating the Yard Long Nacho Cheesy Smoky Hot Dog.Just eat it: Papi Zak (right) and Grumpy pondering if they can finish eating the Yard Long Nacho Cheesy Smoky Hot Dog.

Two Red FM announcers put themselves to the test in the ultimate eating contest.

Does size really matter? In this case, it does. Two of Malaysia‘s biggest (and literally, too) radio announcers Papi Zak and Kavin “Grumpy” Jay from Red FM’s Really Really Late Breakfast Show (Mondays to Fridays, 2pm - 5pm) will attempt to eat a One Yard Long Nacho Cheesy Smoky Hot Dog each, live on air today.

The One Yard Long Nacho Cheesy Smoky Hot Dog is available at Gastro Sentral, Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur. This hefty meal includes a log of meat at a yard long (91.4cm) topped with nacho cheese, tomato salsa, guacamole, pickled jalapenos, deep fried onions and a pound (0.5kg) of fries. And if you are able to wolf down this complete meal in 45 minutes, you will get it completely free.

When the Really Really Late Breakfast Show duo heard of this challenge, they knew they had to put themselves to the test.

The idea of a food challenge is not something new to Papi Zak and Grumpy; their previous dares have included eating the spiciest curry, finishing a whole pot of curry and a 2.4kg steak.

Grumpy recalls: “When I was a poor student in England, I took on food challenges to feed myself. I found out that what the Westerners considered the world’s spiciest curry was mild for Asians, so I frequented that joint for my free meals.”

When Papi Zak was asked how he is preparing to beat Grumpy at this competition, he says: “I’m preparing for this the way I usually do – with plenty of cardio. My definition of cardio is driving around and stuffing my face with delicious food.”

The penalty for not completing this giant meal in 45 minutes is to spend a day in the bustling kitchens of Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur working as a kitchenhand, assisting chefs in preparing and storing food, washing dishes and kitchen utensils as well as cleaning work areas. It is going to be a spectacle to see these guys race against time to gobble one very, very large yet delicious meal.

To date, seven diners have taken on this challenge but couldn’t finish the meal. Will Papi Zak and Grumpy succeed where others have failed? Tune in today from 2pm to catch this food challenge.

Red FM is a subsidiary of Star Radio Group. Stream it live on red.fm

3. Bringing two visions together in Double Punctum
Jun 18th 2013, 23:53

Dancers Wong Jyh Shyong (left) and Ming Low rehearsing for Double Punctum.Dancers Wong Jyh Shyong (left) and Ming Low rehearsing for Double Punctum.

Two visual artists capture the motion of China’s countryside, while another pair convert the stills back into dance in an upcoming production.

LOOKING at the sea at low tide, one could either say the waves are “retreating” or the sand is being revealed. With this in mind, two pairs of photographers and dancers came to the same opinion: whether to capture the fluid motion of the sea or the painterly lines of the sandbanks.

The resulting collaboration between Niche Design and Pentas Project is a part-photography-exhibition and part-dance-showcase titled Double Punctum.

Director Loh Kok Man describes combining the two mediums as a “double exposure”, with two interpretations of the same moment revealing more about the other when viewed as one. In the process of bringing the two visions together, he would pepper the team with questions, from why a certain photo was chosen over another to how it would translate into dance.

Though it may have been Loh’s “lab” that developed the ideas into a concrete image, it was through Pam Lim and William Mok’s viewfinders that the idea was caught.

After their first meeting on a tour of Xiapu, China, four years ago, Lim and Mok quickly connected over their interest in landscape photography and the sights that Xiapu’s endless beaches and quaint fishing villages afforded them.

“Xiapu is famous for its seaweed farming. The shallow waters are studded with thousands of wood rods where the farmers hang their seaweed to dry. This combination of the beaches’ curves and the wood rods’ stiff, straight lines immediately caught my eye,” says Lim, whose love of form lead her to pursue a career in architecture and interior design, forming Niche Design in 2001.

Seeing Lim’s holiday pictures on Facebook, dancer Ming Low decided to reach out to her. “I was inspired. The pictures were so poetic, I could visualise the movement from them. We got to working together, looked for a director and roped in another dancer (Wong Jyh Shyong) and composer (Ng Chor Guan),” recalls Ming Low.

For more inspiration, Lim and Mok went on another trip to China in 2012, this time to the frigid highlands of Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan with Ming Low and Wong in tow.

“Jiuzhaigou is a much more popular place for tourists than Xiapu. (Most people) would probably know it as the place Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was filmed and it is packed in autumn,” says Mok.         There, Lim and Mok compiled a second set of photos for the project, taking close-up shots of snowflakes in black and white.

“Close up, but not in macro,” insists Mok, saying the point was to contrast the snowflakes against the background.

Meanwhile, dancer Wong was drawn to the starkness of the Jiuzhaigou Winter.

“The lack of colour and minimalist imagery drives the imagination, the more you look at it the more you can see. First it may seem like the ice dominates the photo, then it’s the leaves or coarse tree bark that comes to one’s attention when you look again,” notes Wong.

Just as the photo gallery is derived from two journeys to different parts of China, the dance, too, is broken up into two 45-minute long performances.

“In the first dance, the dancers move like the sand – pushed and pulled by the wind and water. There is more organic, flowing movement and seemingly improvised.

“The second dance, based on the ice series, is more structural and will use negative space like the black and white photos. It will also feature words overlaid onto the stage,” explains Ming Low, adding that in the intermission between dances, the audience is encouraged to browse the gallery outside.

Lim assures that while the photos would enhance one’s understanding of the dance, missing it would not be detrimental to the experience.

“For those who’ve really enjoyed the photos, they’re on sale. Proceeds will be channeled to the Young Artist Fund so others will get a chance to explore such collaborations in the future,” says Lim.

Double Punctum will be performed at Pentas 2, Kuala Lumpur Performing Art Centre from June 20 to 22 at 8.30pm, with 3pm matinees on June 22 and 23. Tickets are RM68 for adults and RM38 for students, senior citizens and the disabled. Call 03-4047 9000 or 019-333 6121 for more information. The photo exhibition runs till June 23; admission is free.

4. Life imitating art
Jun 18th 2013, 23:53

The Spudniks realise that they may be, unconsciously, living their lives like a television show.

I AM beginning to wonder if my entire lexicon is borrowed from the characters I watch almost day and night on television. Seriously. See, there’s one already. It started when the folks on medical drama Grey’s Anatomy started using the particular word to express practically every emotion they felt – by changing their tone, “seriously” could reflect incredulous disbelief (seriously???), to surprise (seriously?) to joy (seriously!). When my husband pointed out my overuse of the word, I was aghast. Well, at first I was annoyed and wanted to tell him to “eat my shorts” (guess where that line is from) but after a couple of minutes, the horror of what he said set in.

I mean, Grey’s Anatomy has long become oh-so-uncool – why am I still using phrases from the show? Could I be any more passe? Frak! – that’s a version of the “F” word used commonly on … wait for it … Battlestar Galactica.

The truth is, I find myself using phrases from TV shows all the time. Whether it’s from a game show – “Is that your final answer?”, a reality show – “The tribe has spoken”, a cartoon – “What’s up, doc?”/ “Oakley, dokley”, a seriously dope (now that’s a double whammy) science-fiction/mystery – “The truth is out there”, a really old sitcom – “What’chu talkin’ about, Willis?” or the infamous “Don’t make me angry ..” line from The Incredible Hulk series in the 1980s. (Could you guess where all these famous lines come from?)

But it isn’t just the vocabulary that I’ve picked up. Honestly, since I started tuning in to Community a few weeks ago, I kind of relate to the character Abed, who connects almost all real-life situations with TV plots. In a sticky situation, I quite often wonder what a particular favourite character would do or how they’d react. Living my life in fantasy? Perhaps. Is resistance really futile? Well, maybe it’s a great idea – after all, doesn’t everything always turn out right on TV, albeit after a couple of nail-biting cliffhangers?

Speaking of cliffhangers, the show with the most ludicrous cliffhangers has to be the aforementioned Grey’s Anatomy, right? Bombs in the ER, a gunman walking around the hospital, a deathly plane crash, a drowning incident, a ghost who comes back to woo his lover (they even make out ... eeew!)? Geez, let’s put a caveat on this mimicking-characters-on-TV business shall we? As long as we rule out all soaps or dramas masquerading as soaps, we should be safe. – SI

* I AM trying to think of something that I do that’s been influenced by TV. Like Indra, I do resort to saying a few phrases every now and again (like everyone else, I guess I have resorted to the occasional “The truth is out there” line at some point), but nothing has surreptitiously crept into my vocabulary and stayed there forever, I don’t think.

Now, if I divulge the next piece of information I’ll have to change all my passwords because for the longest time, my password was the same as one Fox Mulder’s (The X-Files) – I thought “TRUSTNO1” was just the coolest password ever, and no one would ever figure it out. Really, it’s the little things like that I think that end up weaving their way into my life.

Another example would be how I tried reading/listening to wise Zen sayings to try and calm myself every day or change my perspective on how I view things. This was all thanks to Damian Lewis’s character, Charlie Crews, on Life. Lewis apparently prepared himself for the role by listening to the tapes of Alan Watts, who wrote The Way Of Zen and became one of that sect’s most famous popularisers in the 1960s. In the show, Crews studied Zen Buddhism while he was in prison. He was such a testimony to his meditations on TV, that I was sure I would reap some good out of it, too! One of the things he used to say was “Maybe life is a dream and we wake up when we die?” I loved it!

I suppose some people, like Indra, will say that Ally McBeal had some clout over me too. Not only do I have meltdowns in the bathroom on a daily basis, I also have a penchant for miniskirts. Now if only I were as slim as Calista Flockhart.

The Wonder Years (which featured Kevin Arnold recalling how he grew up in the 1960s) also influenced me in a very pleasant way. I think Laura Ingalls of Little House On The Prairie did the same. These characters often narrated their tales in dairy-type fashion. And it intrigued me so much, I began penning down my own life stories. For years I kept a diary, detailing accounts, lifechanging moments, places and people I’d seen, and words that I relished. It almost felt like my own voice narrating the events of my life. Occasionally there’s an imaginary soundtrack too (this would be inspired more by movies rather than TV, I think, thanks to the likes of directors like Cameron Crowe and Quentin Tarantino).

One of the biggest impacts, however, had to be Ed Asner of Lou Grant fame. I couldn’t have been more than nine when I used to watch the newspaper drama on TV.

I have no idea what fascinated me about this old balding guy who worked at the Los Angeles Tribune daily newspaper as its city editor, but hooked I was. It made me decide right then at the age of nine that I wanted to be like him. And like him I am – old and balding, maybe, but also devoted to my job as a newspapergal for the last 22 years of my life. – AMC

2. A fitting tribute to Teresa Teng
Jun 18th 2013, 23:53

Tan Soo Suan delivered an outstanding performance at Dama Orchestra’s revival show of The Moon Speaks For My Heart.Tan Soo Suan delivered an outstanding performance at Dama Orchestra’s revival show of The Moon Speaks For My Heart.

Last week’s Teresa Teng tribute concert was a hit with fans of all backgrounds.

DAMA Orchestra’s The Moon Speaks For My Heart show last week was full of poetic visuals and jaw-dropping vocals, powered by an ensemble of seasoned and charismatic stars. A revival of its 2011 Teresa Teng concert, the show featured an explosive opener – the first song-and-dance sequence offered a stunning and effective way of establishing intrigue, as narrators Samuel Tseu and Alex Koh recounted the confusion and hype surrounding news of her death, in 1996.

A full-cast performance of You saw smoke billowing across the stage as a picture of Teng’s face, wistfully staring into a mirror, was split open to the sound of sirens. This was my favourite scene from the show – the set reflected a mood of excitement and heightened tragedy, as an orchestra-fuelled bonanza of dramatic opera voices, rising in unison among the cabaret-style choreography, represented a world shocked and in mourning of her premature demise.

Tseu and Koh then took us through the story of Teng’s life, speaking with dignified composure. Each milestone was punctuated by relevant numbers, sung by resident Dama performers Tan Soo Suan, Chang Fang Chyi and Rachel Tan.

Tan’s soprano vocals stood out, filling every inch of the stage with a haunting power and panache. She breathed her own brand of life and soul into Goodbye My Love, The Boat Song, and some of Teng’s English covers, like Flashdance.

Her rendition of The Way We Were sent chills down my spine.

Rachel also offered an impressive performance – in spite of a petite frame, her voice packs a punch. She also brought a forceful charisma to her performance, owning the stage and excelling in Teng’s earlier folk tunes such as Plucking The Lotus and Going Back To North Nanshan Mountain, the latter of which was particularly captivating. Chang’s renditions differed significantly in style, bringing us to a more mellow, upbeat place, with a touch of razzle dazzle.

Jazz arrangements for songs like The Moon Is Like Lemon and Flowing Water were packed with fun. But some of the best moments were full-company pieces like Copacabana, which featured dynamic visuals and excellent vocals.

The finale, despite the “cheese” risk of medleys, worked really well. In one scene, each singer (including back up singers and narrators) sang excerpts of Teng’s various songs, their voices finally uniting in one harmonic crescendo. It was as if I was watching all the different stages of Teng’s personality and past being slowly pieced together to create a climatic whole, representing the epitome of all her achievements.

Of course, they save the best for last. The show’s closing scene indulged the audience with Teng’s most popular, and possibly her most beloved, song: The Moon Speaks For My Heart. As the applause sounded, I couldn’t help wondering how a two-hour show seemed to be over so fast.

The Moon Speaks For My Heart will be running till June 23 at Pentas 1, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre. For more information, call 03-4047 9000 / 9010 or contact iLasso Tickets (03-7957 6088). For online booking, visit ilassotickets.com.

6. DiCaprio to play money mogul in new Scorsese film
Jun 18th 2013, 07:59

Scorsese's new hotly-anticipated film, The Wolf Of Wall Street, has just dropped its first trailer.

Paramount Pictures offers a glimpse of one of the highlights of its end-of-year lineup. Two years after his family film digression Hugo Cabret, Martin Scorsese has teamed up with Leonardo DiCaprio again in this roguish film based on the memoirs of infamous stock broker Jordan Belfort.

Pitched as a thriller, then as a drama, The Wolf Of Wall Street ultimately looks to be more of a satirical comedy about Wall Street in the 1990 boom years, to judge from the stills released by Paramount Pictures.

In the trailer, DiCaprio tears down the fourth wall to show us the life of Belfort, the money-driven kingpin of an investment firm who eventually fell afoul of the law, got arrested in 1998, and served 22 months in jail for manipulating the stock market and running a boiler room. Matthew McConaughey and Jonah Hill stand out as well in this colorful clip.

The Wolf Of Wall Street is due out in North America on November 15. This feature is bound to be a frontrunner in the competition for the Oscars in 2014.

7. A taste of Kollywood
Jun 18th 2013, 08:30

Malaysian-born actor Shures Sharma (left) with producer L.D. Saravanan at the launch of their movie, Krishna Thulasi in Kuala Lumpur.Malaysian-born actor Shures Sharma (left) with producer L.D. Saravanan at the launch of their movie, Krishna Thulasi in Kuala Lumpur.

New Tamil movie Krishna Thulasi is the result of a Malaysia-India collaboration.

Malaysian and Kollywood actors band together to star in a heartwarming family movie called Krishna Thulasi. Filmed in several locations in India including Kerala, Chennai and Pondicherry, as well as in Kuala Lumpur, this Tamil movie offers a little bit of comedy, romance and drama.

It is produced by local production companies SSK Resources and Nobel Entertainment. This is SSK’s pilot project in exploring ventures in the Indian film industry.

At the movie’s official launch in KL recently, producer L.D. Saravanan said, “I have produced a lot of local movies and have never ventured into the international market. But after developing good ties with some of the producers and movie makers in India, I decided to take on this challenge.

“We have to somehow find a way to bring Malaysia into the international market and this seemed like a great opportunity.”

He added that while shooting the film, the cast and crew had to travel back and forth India and Malaysia. This brought everyone closer together. “It helped us understand each other’s backgrounds and cultures. We formed a good working team between us,” said Saravanan.

The lead character in Krishna Thulasi – Jayanth – is played by Shures Sharma, a Malaysian actor.

“This is my first time ever working on a movie, so it really was a great challenge as well as a good experience. For one, I don’t know how to dance and it’s almost ‘illegal’ to not have at least one dance scene in a Tamil movie!” said Shures.

“I was placed under vigorous training and was on my feet for three weeks in a row learning the moves,” the charismatic actor added.

He also revealed that his voice was dubbed over in the movie and said that he is looking forward to learn the Tamil language further and hopes to become more fluent in it.

“I was educated in a Malaysian school, therefore my intonation and language skills are not perfect, even though I speak Tamil rather fluently.”

Despite all that, though, Shures said he enjoyed himself immensely and will be working on his second movie which starts shooting next month in Chennai, India. After trying his skills at a family movie, Shures will now attempt to do a thriller.

Krishna Thulasi was directed by first-time director Uma Riyaz Khan, an Indian actress who has starred in a number of television programmes and movies. The movie also stars Sanam, Ilavarasu, Barath Kalyan, Kavithalayaa Krishnan, Sonia Vickneswary and Devi.

Krishna Thulasi runs for 105 minutes and contains two songs – the sentimental Pokkal Unthiren and fast-paced Dola Dola – by music director Vedala Hemachandran.

It revolves around Thulasi, the beautiful wife of Krishna who does a lot of charity work. However, in spite of her wonderful life, Thulasi is unable to conceive, and feels depressed by it. Things start to get worse for Thulasi when her brother-in-law’s problems inadvertently become hers.

Krishna Thulasi is now showing in cinemas nationwide and will be released in India next month.

8. Beware of film industry implosion
Jun 18th 2013, 08:30

Hollywood veterans Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have sparked a debate by warning of an “implosion” of the traditional movie industry, amid soaring budgets and competition from cable TV.

E.T. and Jurassic Park legend Spielberg revealed that he almost failed to get his Oscar-winning political biopic Lincoln into theatres last year.

Star Wars icon Lucas warned that access for films to be released into theatres is “getting smaller and smaller” and said cable television has become much more adventurous.

“I think eventually the Lincolns will go away and they’re going to be on television,” Lucas said at the opening of a new interactive media building at the University of Southern California last week.

“As mine almost was,” Spielberg interjected at the event, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “This close – ask HBO – this close.”

Lucas added: “We’re talking Lincoln and Red Tails (a 2012 film which Lucas executive produced) – we barely got them into theatres. You’re talking about Steven Spielberg and George Lucas can’t get their movie into a theatre.”

Spielberg said some young filmmakers’ ideas were “too fringe-y for the movies,” adding: “That’s the big danger, and there’s eventually going to be an implosion – or a big meltdown.

“There’s going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen mega-budget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that’s going to change the paradigm,” he said. – AFP

3. Mumford & Sons bassist on the mend after brain op
Jun 18th 2013, 06:57

REUTERS - British folk band Mumford & Sons' bassist Ted Dwane posted a message on Monday saying he was recovering after brain surgery to remove a blood clot.

Dwane posted a picture of himself with a shaved head on the band's official website with the caption, "Bear with a sore head! Thanks so much for all the well wishing, it seems to be working! I'm home."

The Grammy-winning London band was forced to cancel the final three U.S. dates of its Summer Stampede tour last week after doctors discovered a clot on the surface of Dwane's brain, which required immediate surgery.

Hawaiian folk musician Jack Johnson filled Mumford & Sons' headline slot on Saturday at the Bonnaroo music festival in Manchester, Tennessee.

The four-member band, which formed in 2007, also includes Marcus Mumford, Winston Marshall and Ben Lovett. They won Album of the Year for Babel at the Grammy Awards in February.

5. HBO series with Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson set for 2014
Jun 18th 2013, 07:28

HBO has revealed the first trailer for True Detective, a crime series in which the two big screen actors team up to track down a serial killer.

True Detective will bring together two detectives -- Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), -- who have been chasing the same serial killer in Louisiana for 17 years.

They cross paths in 2012 after a mysterious 1995 murder case gets reopened.

Throughout eight episodes, the series will present multiple points of view and various temporal perspectives, interspersing scenes from past and present.

The finale of the first season will bring about the case's resolution, and following seasons will be similarly structured with different characters.

This 30-second teaser gives us a peek at the two heroes but does not present any of the secondary characters, played by Michelle Monaghan, Alexandra Daddario, Elizabeth Reaser, Michael Potts and Wood Harris.

True Detective will be on HBO in 2014.

4. Jay Z's million-album Samsung sale unlikely to count for charts
Jun 18th 2013, 07:28

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rapper Jay Z's upcoming studio album will go to a million users of Samsung smartphones three days before its official release in a promotional deal, but the distribution is unlikely to count toward official sales figures, an industry expert said on Monday.

Jay Z, 43, announced on Sunday in a three-minute television commercial during the telecast of basketball's NBA Finals that his latest album Magna Carter Holy Grail will be released on July 4 exclusively to 1 million users of Samsung smartphones who had downloaded a special app. That is three days before its public release.

On Monday, the rapper (pic) said the record was "platinum," posting on Twitter, "If 1 Million records gets SOLD and billboard (magazine) doesn't report it, did it happen? Ha...Platinum!!!"

For official counting purposes the answer is "no," said David Bakula, an analyst for Nielsen Entertainment, whose Nielsen SoundScan figures are used to rank Billboard's weekly music chart.

Although the rapper's latest album is expected top the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart in its first week, bulk sales that are given away are not counted in total sales, according to Billboard's policy, even if the rapper and his record label are paid for the records.

"The bottom line is they're getting paid on a million albums," Bakula told Reuters. "From what Billboard considers chart-eligible, we don't count free-to-consumers (albums)."

In the commercial for Magna Carter Holy Grail, Jay Z is seen in a recording studio discussing the new album, release date and the deal with South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

The decision to distribute the album to Samsung users three days before the record becomes available to the general public on July 7 may come as a blow to Samsung's chief smartphone rival, Apple Inc., makers of iPhones and music distribution service iTunes.

This is the first solo album since 2009's The Blueprint 3 for Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter.

The rapper last collaborated with rapper Kanye West on the 2011 album Watch The Throne, which topped album charts and was accompanied by a sold-out world tour.

Jay Z will begin a Legends Of Summer North American stadium tour with pop singer Justin Timberlake on July 17, after featuring on Timberlake's hit song Suit & Tie.

Samsung holds the largest global market share among smartphone makers with 32.7 percent. Apple is in second with 17.3 percent. Samsung shipped 70.7 million phones in the first quarter this year.

2. Nigella Lawson's hubby downplays photo of him grabbing her neck
Jun 18th 2013, 06:27

LONDON (Reuters) - Former advertising tycoon Charles Saatchi on Monday downplayed photographs in which he is shown grabbing his wife, celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, around the neck, saying it was just a "playful tiff."

Britain's Sunday People newspaper published photographs of Saatchi with his hands around his wife's neck, and with her in tears, while they were having dinner on the terrace of a London restaurant.

The 70-year-old multimillionaire art collector was also photographed pinching 53-year-old Lawson's nose before walking away from a seafood restaurant in upmarket Mayfair on June 9.

Saatchi, who writes a column for The Evening Standard, told the newspaper that he recognised the impact of the pictures but said they conveyed the wrong impression.

"About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella's neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasise my point," he said.

"There was no grip. It was a playful tiff. The pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place. Nigella's tears were because we both hate arguing, not because she had been hurt."

He said the couple made up by the time they reached home. But he acknowledged that Lawson had moved out, saying this was for her privacy.

"The paparazzi were congregated outside our house after the story broke yesterday morning, so I told Nigella to take the kids 'til the dust settled," he explained.

Lawson, known for her home cooking TV shows and cookbooks, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Police told reporters that they were examining the images which were taken by a freelance photographer, but they had not received any complaints about the argument.

Lawson, the daughter of the former Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson, married Saatchi in 2003 after her first husband, journalist John Diamond, died of throat cancer.

1. Musical on golden Nanyang era
Jun 18th 2013, 00:21

A ride to past: Take a nostalgic trip back with KopiSusu cast members Yudi Yap (right) and Tay Cher Siang (left) as well as director James Lee.A ride to past: Take a nostalgic trip back with KopiSusu cast members Yudi Yap (right) and Tay Cher Siang (left) as well as director James Lee.

A new musical hopes to share memories of the golden Nanyang era.

MORE than 70 years ago, during the pre-World War II era, hordes of mainland Chinese left their impoverished homelands in search of better fortunes.

Thousands flocked southwards to South-East Asia, also known as the Nanyang, where the poor worked in plantations, tin mines or nightclubs.

Some made it and became successful, but others, who were not so lucky, barely scraped through. That was the reality of lives toiled, of grittiness and perseverance, of failures even, among these commonpeople.

But how many of us have heard of these yesteryear stories? Director James Lee hopes to provide a glimpse into the world of Chinese migrants by weaving a story concept into an upcoming musical called KopiSusu.

It is produced by renowned local oldie singer Yudi Yap, who will also be the main performer.

The production seeks to reintroduce and reintepret songs of our parents’ time, during what Lee terms as a colourful period in the 1950s, a time when the Chinese settled and formed their own communities (in the region).

“There was a lot of cross-cultural reference and borrowing going on in South-East Asia at that time. Some popular Chinese numbers were originally Malay, so we found the scene to be rather happening as we were not just absorbing cultures like we do now,” said Lee.

KopiSusu was initially conceptualised as a concert, but when Yudi roped me in to direct, I thought it would be more meaningful to experiment having dramatic elements and light subplots laced into it.

“This was how I came up with the story idea of using three Chinese migrant characters who, as singers, try to make it big as stars.

“Their struggles are not often chronicled, as what audiences usually see is the glamorous side of the stage and costumes, not their lives behind the scenes. When these three characters are shown rehearsing in a small apartment, older audiences might relate and appreciate a typical scenario of those who came to seek greener pastures here,” explained Lee.

Besides Yap, the two other roles will be played by Tay Cher Siang, who is also the production’s music director, and guest performer Evan Siau.

The story goes that Tay had received a call for a last-minute gig in a nightclub in Kuala Lumpur, and brought Yap together to rehearse.

Siau plays the role of Tay’s brother, who decides to leave (the then) Malaya soon after to try his luck overseas. Then Tay gets a call saying that his gig has since been replaced – which caused great disappointment to himself and Yap.

The choice is for them to leave or to stay on – and they are likely to stick with the latter option.

Lee hopes the message that ultimately comes through is that Chinese immigrants, as he had discovered, were not keen to remain but to return eventually to China once they had earned enough.

“They have always yearned to go back and be buried along with their ancestors. Yet it’s the circumstances that forced them to assimilate into a new country,” he added.

Meanwhile, Yap says the name KopiSusu is actually derived from a 1960s song, which has been covered in different versions, including one by the late Malaysian legend Saloma.

“The lyrics are funny and silly, which I liked. ‘Kopi susu’ also refers to a very Malaysian beverage, where by adding sugar and milk, it becomes ‘mixed’, which is what we wanted to do for this production.

“It’s a very modern Nanyang showcase, where we hope to capture the vibrancy of Malaya in the 1950s-60s. The culture was so open, while theatre at that time was very much influenced by Hong Kong.

“People took movie outings seriously by dressing up. It was also a time where many harboured dreams and ambitions, yet these are mostly average and not materially rich people,” described Yap.

She says audiences can expect surprises with KopiSusu, which she hints is stylised with charming old-fashioned jazz, but with funky infusions. There will be 20-plus songs performed (although the number is still being finalised) over a one-and-a-half-hour duration.

As for Siau, he first met Yap while working on the Princess Wen Cheng musical, and she asked him to collaborate together for another production after that, but his schedule did not permit it.

“When she asked me again this time around for KopiSusu, I could say yes since my role is small, which meant it could fit into my other filming commitments.

“I will be singing a few songs and there is a humorous twist to my character, too,” said Siau.

KopiSusu runs from June 20 to 23; showtime is at 8.30pm (with additional 3pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday). The show will be held at Damansara Performing Art Centre, H-01, DPAC, Empire Damansara, Jalan PJU 8/8, Damansara Perdana, Selangor. Ticket prices are from RM48-RM88, with a 15% discount for senior citizens aged 56 years and above. For enquiries, call 03-2054 0960 / 016-715 4345.

5. Shanghai opens star-packed film festival
Jun 17th 2013, 05:59

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Shanghai on Saturday opened its annual film festival packed with star power in acknowledgement of China's role as the second largest box office in the world.

The government-backed Shanghai International Film Festival is mainland China's premier event of its kind, though capital Beijing has tried to steal the show with its own film festival which marked its third year in April.

American director Oliver Stone made a return appearance, after attending the first Shanghai film festival in 1993. "You're bigger and more exorbitant," Stone said, referring to the changes.

Chinese actress Xu Fan, Taiwanese singer and actor Jay Chou, and Chinese model and actoress Li Xin An pose on the red carpet during the opening ceremony of the Shanghai International Film Festival in Shanghai.Chinese actress Xu Fan, Taiwanese singer and actor Jay Chou, and Chinese model and actoress Li Xin An pose on the red carpet during the opening ceremony of the Shanghai International Film Festival in Shanghai.

Local favourites like Hong Kong star Chow Yun-fat and Taiwan's Jay Chou, who played sidekick Kato in the movie version of The Green Hornet made appearances on the red carpet to promote upcoming films.

"This is the only category one film festival in mainland China," Teng Jimeng, professor of film at Beijing Foreign Studies University, told AFP.

"The rise of the Chinese film market, absolutely, is why the Shanghai Film Festival is becoming increasingly popular and important in the eyes of film makers."

British director Tom Hooper, whose films include Les Miserables and The King's Speech is heading the jury for the festival's main award.

Actor Keanu Reeves is also due to attend during the nine-day festival to promote his directorial debut Man Of Tai Chi.

China's box office surged 36 percent annually to US$2.7 billion in 2012, behind only North America with ticket sales of US$10.8 billion, according to the Motion Picture Association of America.

But foreign films in China come under an annual quota and face censorship by cultural authorities who excise content deemed politically sensitive or obscene.

Imports of foreign films into China on a revenue-sharing basis are limited to just 34 annually, though last year the quota was raised from 20.

In a recent case of censorship, Chinese theatres mysteriously yanked director Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained in April then resumed showing the film a month later, apparently with cuts to a scene showing star Jamie Foxx nude.

In the latest James Bond spy thriller Skyfall -- partly shot in Shanghai -- authorities cut a scene showing prostitution in Macau, a special administrative region of China, and a line in which Bond's nemesis mentions being tortured by Chinese security agents.

Such censorship is one of the reasons why Shanghai's film festival lags behind others in the Asian region, which screen movies with more edgy content.

"They (Shanghai organisers) do encounter quite a lot of challenges in terms of picking the controversial, experimental stuff from the West. Hong Kong and Tokyo don't seem to have that sort of obstacle," said Teng of Beijing Foreign Studies University.

Shanghai's offerings include a collection of Oliver Stone films and a tribute to the early works of Alfred Hitchcock. Asian films include a retrospective of the films of Hong Kong actor Leslie Cheung, who killed himself in 2003.

4. 'Man Of Steel' sets June record
Jun 17th 2013, 05:59

(Reuters) - Man Of Steel, the big-budget reboot of the Superman franchise, leaped over the apocalyptic buddy comedy This Is The End, collecting a muscular US$113.1 million to lead the domestic box office with the year's second-largest debut weekend and the biggest June opening ever.

Man Of Steel, starring British-born Henry Cavill in the first Superman movie released in seven years, carried a hefty budget of US$225 million and took in a total of US$125 million through Sunday including early screenings, according to BoxOffice.com.

The special-effects laden film is the story of the infant Kal-El, who escapes his doomed home planet Krypton and grows up in the idyllic town of Smallville with his parents, played by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane. Amy Adams plays the budding super hero's girlfriend Lois Lane.

The film, directed by Zack Snyder, with Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) serving as co-writer and one of its producers, added US$71.6 million from overseas box offices in 24 markets.

"Today is a big day for us," said Warner Bros' president of theatrical distribution Dan Fellman, noting the film's record opening. He added that Man Of Steel was now well-poised to reap big box office "in the heart of the summer play time."

The studio was also pleased by 56 percent male, 44 percent female audience, which Fellman said bodes well being a higher-female makeup than was usual for superhero-centered pictures.

"The film is playing extremely well for fan boys as well as the family," he said.

This Is The End, written by star Seth Rogen and his childhood friend Evan Goldberg, collected US$20.5 million at theaters in the domestic market comprised of the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates collected by Reuters.

"We're off to a really good start," said Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures' president of worldwide distribution.

Citing "great word of mouth," Bruer predicted the movie "is going to be one of those films that's going to be around for a good part of the summer. It's so fresh and original," he added.

The comedy depicting the end of the world stars more than a dozen well-known Hollywood actors including James Franco, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Emma Watson.

In third place, the comedy heist caper Now You See Me continued its stronger-than-expected showing with ticket sales of US$10.3 million, bringing its three-week total to US$80 million.

Man Of Steel came out of the gate roaring, with US$9 million in midnight showings early on Friday morning, according to the box office division of Hollywood.com, adding US$12 million in Thursday showings in association with retailer Walmart.

The film broke the record of US$110.3 million held by 2010's Toy Story 3 for a June opening and was this year's second-biggest debut weekend after Iron Man 3.

The Purge, made for US$3 million by the producer of the low-budget Paranormal Activity series, finished fifth with US$8.2 million, behind the speeding car franchise sixth film, Fast & Furious 6, which took in US$9.4 million in its fourth week in release for a total of US$220 million since Memorial Day.

Starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, The Purge is set in 2022 when the U.S. government reduces crime by allowing almost all crime to go unpunished during a 12-hour "purge" period.

The Internship, a comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson based on the antics of nerds in search of a job at internet giant Google, continued its lackluster box office showing, selling US$7 million worth of tickets to finish sixth.

After Earth, a US$130 million post-apocalyptic thriller starring Will Smith and his teenage son Jaden, continued its weak showing at U.S. and Canadian box office with US$3.6 million, in ninth place. After Earth did perform well overseas, selling US$24 million worth of tickets outside the domestic market.
